How does the McKenzie Method work?
The McKenzie Method is a patient-centered approach to treating back and neck pain in Princeton, NJ. It is based on the principle that mechanical forces can both cause and alleviate pain, and it emphasizes the patient’s active involvement in their own treatment.
One of our therapists will first work with you to complete a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms, classifying them into subgroups based on how they react to particular movements, postures, or forces.
The McKenzie classification system allows us to determine an accurate mechanical diagnosis– and your best course of treatment.
Once your assessment is complete, our therapists will use that information to provide a detailed overview of which specific exercise(s) or posture will best treat your condition and which ones you should avoid. The McKenzie Method focuses on patient involvement and education to help empower you to resolve your pain and restore your body to full functionality.
In addition to helping you treat your own pain, the McKenzie Method also includes education about preventing the pain from returning.
Patients are taught how to recognize and respond to their symptoms with postural corrections, targeted exercises, and strategies to prevent future episodes.
The 4-Step Recovery Program
Reduce
The first step is focused on managing your pain. Based on the assessment, we would prescribe one specific movement or position that needs to be repeated daily. This doesn’t require equipment and could be performed anywhere. Many experience pain relief after the first visit.
Maintain
We educate you to minimize the pain between your appointments by reviewing your postures and avoiding certain activities until you are pain-free. We encourage you to remain active throughout while staying away from high-impact movements.
Restore
Once pain-free, we strategically oversee your unrestricted return to all previous activities like household chores, work, and sports based on your specific goals.
This involves a gradual introduction from lower to higher loads while avoiding any flare-ups.
Prevent
True success of any treatment lies in managing the current problem and preventing future episodes. We discuss a simple, long-term plan to help you avoid any recurrences. Our most compliant patients rarely return for the same problem again.
